Day 26: Dude, are you still with us? (Little Corn Island)

Day 26: Dude, are you still with us? (Little Corn Island)

So my first adventure on Little Corn was...memorable!

Here goes...

Part One

Within two hours of arriving at The Lighthouse I was off on a snorkelling and fishing trip. Happily, two lovely German girls were also going from my place and we joined a group of three US boys and a Canadian couple in the boat along with our local guides Marlon and Jeffrey.

We zoomed out into the ocean and before long I was grappling with flippers and a snorkelling mask and mastering the art of falling off the boat backwards (I don't think my particular technique of throwing myself over the side like a sack of potatoes was textbook, but hey ho).

Snorkelling was amazing, I wish I could name everything I saw, but I can't so: bright blue fish, black and white fish, big white fish with blue mouth and yellow fish.

We also saw a couple of reef sharks and a big old sting ray, which was really cool. Marlon was leading the snorkelling and dived down to pull the reef shark's tail - not sure if that move is in the Good Snorkelling Handbook.

We got back on the boat and then the real treat, we spotted THREE DOPHINS! This was the first time I'd seen any in the wild and I could honestly have burst with joy, it was an amazing moment for me.

I think it's safe to say I peaked at the dolphins.

Part Two

Marlon anchored the boat so we could start fishing and we'd barely reeled in two fish before the dreaded sea sickness hit I was violently throwing up over the side of the boat.

I'm sure repeatedly puking into the Caribbean in front of seven strangers is character building, but I can't say that I'd recommend it.

It felt like everybody stopped talking so all any of us could hear was the sound of me vomming.

Eventually Marlon told me to lie down on top of the locker box, and there, with a life jacket as a pillow, I went to sleep looking like a beached whale in a sarong I'm sure.

I woke to realise that we were back on shore and that seven people were stood staring at me waiting for me to move so they could get their gear out of the locker.

All I remember is one of the Americans saying: "Dude, are you still with us? Did you make it?"

Thankfully, Anya, one of the German girls said she was going to leave the group early (we still had a beach fish grilling session and another snorkelling expedition to go) and asked if I wanted to head back to The Lighthouse with her. I was beyond grateful!

So, my first day in paradise and I throw up into the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

To quote Yazz, the only way is up, right?
